Notes

For example, the Sheppard-Towner Maternity and Infancy Protection Act was signed into law by President Harding in 1921. It provided federal funds to improve maternity and infant health. Opposed by medical groups, including the AMA, the law’s funding was discontinued in 1929 and later restored under F.D.R.

The Democrats won only 34% of the popular vote, carrying 11 states to the Republicans’ 37 states.

Although Franklin Roosevelt was on the losing ticket, he became well-known through his wide and energetic campaigning. He was elected governor of New York in 1928, and U.S. president in 1932.
